Amapiano stars Focalistic, DJ Maphorisa, Xduppy and Benzoo have sparked online backlash after previewing an unreleased track titled Cat Matlala.
The controversy began after Focalistic shared a short clip of the group dancing to the song on social media. The video quickly spread across X, drawing mixed reactions and intense criticism from users.
Much of the backlash centres on the song’s title, which references Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, a controversial South African businessman currently associated with serious legal allegations. Many social media users felt the reference was inappropriate, arguing that it appeared to trivialise issues linked to real-life criminal cases.
Several users questioned how the idea made it through the creative process, with one suggesting that the artists collectively failed to consider how the title would be received. Others took aim directly at Focalistic, claiming his influence has declined since his breakout hit.
The criticism extended beyond the artists, with some commenters suggesting that the reaction reflects a broader issue, stating that South Africa has an unhealthy relationship with glorifying criminal figures in popular culture.
One particularly vocal user challenged the artists to consider people allegedly affected by Matlala’s actions, describing the teaser as unsettling and insensitive. Others urged fans to save screenshots of reactions, predicting that comments might later be removed.
Amid the outrage, a few users came to the artists’ defence, arguing that the backlash was overblown. One supporter claimed the song is not actually about Cat Matlala, but merely includes a brief metaphorical reference, noting that similar comparisons are common in rap and street-inspired music.
As the debate continues online, the artists involved have yet to issue an official response, leaving fans divided over whether the teaser crossed a line or was simply misunderstood.
